Aragonese Palace

A particularly important building for the history of Mugnano del Cardinale was the Palazzo d'Aragona, located in via Roma, at the beginning of the town. It was built during the second half of the 15th century by Giovanni d'Aragona.

In the seventeenth century, the palace underwent a change of destination, becoming a large guesthouse called "Del Procaccio", one of the most popular buildings in the South, thanks to its happy location along the ancient Strada delle Puglie.

It is due to Cardinal Giovanni d'Aragona who, in 1467, wanted it to be erected as a permanent administrative seat and abbey building. For this reason it is also known as the Cardinal's Palace.

On 13 January 1497, during the transfer from Montevergine to Naples, the relics of San Gennaro and his remains were housed. In the sixteenth century the Palace was transformed into a guesthouse for the reception of pilgrims who come from the Sanctuary of Montevergine. It is the most representative civil religious building of the architecture of the sixteenth century.

To date it has undergone restoration work on the left wing of the loggia and houses the Cocktail Bar / Restaurant Caffé Aragonese.
